Uganda now Marburg virus free - Health Ministry announces

Combined WHO and Ministry of Health team declare end of Marburg virus outbreak in Uganda

Uganda now Marburg virus free - Health Ministry announces

Uganda declares end of Marburg virus disease outbreak

Uganda has successfully controlled an outbreak of Marburg virus disease and prevented its spread only weeks after it was first detected, the World Health Organization said on Friday (December 8).

The Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak was declared by the Uganda Ministry of Health on 19 October, 2017 following laboratory tests conducted at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) which confirmed that one person had succumbed to MVD on 13 October 2017.

“Uganda has led an exemplary response. Health authorities and partners, with the support of World Health Organisation (WHO), were able to detect and control the spread of Marburg virus disease within a matter of weeks,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

The country’s tourism authorities, tour operators and hotels, health authorities have been working to reassure tourists that it is safe to travel to Uganda.

WHO advised against the application of any travel or trade restrictions on Uganda or the affected area based on the current information available on this event. Travelers to the Mount Elgon National Park bat caves were advised to avoid exposure to fruit bats and contact with non-human primates, and, to the extent possible, to wear gloves and protecting clothing, including masks.

Visitor numbers especially from traditional source markets such as Tanzania, DRC, Kenya, South Africa, UK and USA remained steady despite the outbreak.  Travellers are still showing interest in the country.

Travellers realise the uniqueness of the destination, with its rich wildlife, open savannahs, the warm smiles from the welcoming citizens and culture. Many tour operators have special offers, making now the best time to visit East African country. Create your tailor-made itinerary through Uganda with #Uganda Travel Advisor: Responsible Tourism Co.

Well done to the teams of the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation.
