SOME HISTORY TORORO TOWN, UGANDA
Tororo Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, has a rich and diverse history. The name “Tororo” is believed to have originated from the Iteso word “Etororo,” meaning “rock,” which is fitting given the prominent Tororo Rock that overlooks the town.
The area was initially inhabited by the Jopadhola people, who migrated from modern-day South Sudan in the 16th century. Over time, Tororo became a melting pot of various ethnic groups, including the Iteso and Bagisu, contributing to its cultural diversity.
During the colonial period, the British administration recognized Tororo’s strategic importance due to its location along the Kenya-Uganda railway. This led to the establishment of Tororo as a regional hub, facilitating trade and transportation between Uganda and Kenya.
Tororo played a significant role during the Uganda-Tanzania War (1978-1979). The town was garrisoned by the Uganda Army’s Air and Sea Battalion. In March 1979, rebels loyal to Milton Obote attacked Tororo, leading to a series of battles and counterattacks. The town was eventually captured by the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) in late April 1979.
In early February 1986, during the Ugandan Bush War, Tororo was captured by the National Resistance Army (NRA) from the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA). The UNLA attempted to retake the town but was repelled.
Today, Tororo is known for its vibrant community and economic activities. It is home to the Tororo Cement Factory, one of the largest cement manufacturers in Uganda. The town also boasts several attractions, including the iconic Tororo Rock, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.
