Uganda Tourism: US Embassy in Kampala donate biosafety laboratory to Queen Elizabeth National Park

UGANDA TOURISM AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION NEWS

The US Embassy in Kampala, Ugandan capital together with the Uganda Minister of Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities Hon. Tom Butime unveiled a biosafety level II laboratory at Mweya in Queen Elizabeth National Park, the second largest conservation and wildlife park in Uganda.

The bio safety laboratory at Mweya was constructed and equipped with the generous support from the American people.

Through the Defense Threat Reduction Agency of the United States (US) Government, the new laboratory will be helpful in various diagnostics to Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) the neighbouring districts and the Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration.

In her congratulation Tweet to Uganda Wildlife Authority, the US Ambassador to Uganda Natalie E. Brown, said on her wall, “Huge congratulations to Uganda Wildlife Authority on your new, fully functional lab in Mweya #QENP Queen Elizabeth National Park & for leading the charge in improving Uganda’s health security.

Ambassador Natalie added, “United States (US) is proud to fund this USD 6.3M (UGX 23B) lab & expand your ability to detect, diagnose & surveil dangerous pathogens.”

After launching the US funded bio safety lab,  on day 2, the US Ambassador joined Uganda Wildlife Authority representatives & local officials for a tour of Kazinga Channel at Queen Elizabeth National Park to discuss animal health, zoonotic disease, conservation, & mitigating conflict between  & communities in the park.

Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth wildlife park has one of the world’s largest concentration of hippos.
