SOME HISTORY OF MANAFWA TOWN, UGANDA
Manafwa Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, is the largest town in Manafwa District and serves as the district headquarters. The town is situated approximately 32 kilometers South-East of Mbale, the largest metropolitan area in the sub-region, and about 247 kilometers northeast of Kampala, Uganda’s capital.
Manafwa District was created in 2005, carved out from the larger Mbale District. This administrative change aimed to bring services closer to the people and improve local governance. In 2006, the Northern part of Manafwa District was further divided to form Bududa District. Later, in July 2017, Namisindwa District was also carved out from the eastern part of Manafwa.
Manafwa Town is located within the Mount Elgon National Park, surrounded by tropical mountainous terrain. The town sits at an average elevation of 1,196 meters above sea level. The Manafwa River flows immediately South of the town, adding to its scenic beauty.
The population of Manafwa Town has seen significant changes over the years. According to the national population census in 2002, the town had about 11,740 residents. By 2010, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) estimated the population at 15,400, and it slightly increased to 15,800 in 2011. However, there was a slight decline in 2014, with the population recorded at 13,645. By 2020, the population was estimated to be around 16,000, with a growth rate of approximately 2.4% annually between 2015 and 2020.
The town is part of the Bugisu sub-region, predominantly inhabited by the Bamasaba people. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with residents engaging in the cultivation of crops such as coffee, bananas, and maize. The town’s market serves as a central hub for trading these agricultural products, contributing to the local economy.
Manafwa Town’s history is closely tied to the broader historical and administrative changes in the region, reflecting Uganda’s efforts to decentralize governance and improve local administration.
