SOME HISTORY OF BUDUDA TOWN, UGANDA
Bududa Town is located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, on the South-Western slopes of Mount Elgon. It serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Bududa District. The town is situated approximately 35 kilometers South-East of Mbale and about 258 kilometers North-East of Kampala.
Bududa District was created in 2006, having been carved out from the larger Mbale District. This administrative change aimed to improve local governance and bring services closer to the people. Bududa Town became the district headquarters, playing a central role in the administration of the new district.
Bududa Town and its surrounding areas are prone to landslides due to the volcanic nature of the soils, steep terrain, and high rainfall. The region has experienced several devastating landslides, including the 2010 landslide that killed around 100 people. These natural disasters have significantly impacted the town’s development and the lives of its residents.
The town is part of the Bugisu sub-region, predominantly inhabited by the Bamasaba people. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with residents growing crops such as coffee, bananas, and maize. The town’s market serves as a central hub for trading these agricultural products, contributing to the local economy.
In recent years, efforts have been made to improve infrastructure and services in Bududa Town. These include the construction of roads, schools, and healthcare facilities. However, the town continues to face challenges related to natural disasters and population pressure on available land.
Bududa's history is marked by its strategic location, administrative significance, and the resilience of its people in the face of natural calamities.
