The Gaddafi Mosque, also known as the Uganda National Mosque, is a significant landmark in Kampala, Uganda. The idea for the mosque dates back to the early 1970s when then-President Idi Amin initiated its construction. Originally named the Old Kampala National Mosque, the project faced numerous delays due to political instability and economic challenges. Construction halted in 1976 and remained incomplete for several decades.

In 2001, Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi offered to fund the completion of the mosque as a gift to Uganda’s Muslim community. This generous contribution led to the mosque being named after him.
