THE WORLD WAR MEMORIAL MONUMENT TRAVEL GUIDE, KAMPALA

LOCATION OF THE WORLD WAR MEMORIAL MONUMENT, KAMPALA

The World War Memorial Monument in Kampala is located along Kampala Road, next to the Central Police Station. This monument was built in 1945 by the British colonial government to honor Ugandans who died supporting British soldiers during the World Wars.

SOME HISTORY OF THE WORLD WAR MEMORIAL MONUMENT, KAMPALA

The World War Memorial in Kampala, also known as the Kampala (Nakawa Road) Cemetery, holds significant historical importance. This memorial was established by the British colonial government in 1945 to honor Ugandans who died supporting British soldiers during the World Wars.

Located along Kampala Road next to the Central Police Station, the memorial is heavily guarded by the Ugandan military. The cemetery contains 26 Commonwealth burials from the Second World War, including 19 soldiers from the East African Forces and seven members of the Uganda Police. Additionally, it commemorates one First World War casualty and includes a Belgian war grave.

The cemetery is situated on the Old Port Bell Road, about 8 kilometers from the city center, near the Uganda Coffee Board building. The war graves plot is all that remains of a larger African burial ground, now largely used for agriculture.

This memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Ugandans during the World Wars and stands as a testament to their contributions to global peace efforts.
