Volcanoes Safaris Mount Gahinga Lodge Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was the first lodge built by Praveen Moman and opened in 2002.
It is the perfect base to go gorilla tracking on the Ugandan side of the Virungas, track the rare golden monkey, climb a volcano, walk through local villages and most of all to share the culture of the Batwa, the oldest inhabitants of the Central African rainforest.
Volcanoes Safaris Mount Gahinga Lodge Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, Mount Gahinga Lodge rests on the edge of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in south-western Uganda and is a tranquil and secluded safari escape.
The park is home to mountain gorillas, rare golden monkeys, atmospheric bamboo forests and the sacred Ngarama Cave, which was once home to the king of the Batwa Pygmies.
Against a backdrop of three mighty, now-extinct volcanoes, this exclusive-use lodge is set in a beautiful landscape of gardens and has nine rustic bandas designed to fit seamlessly into the natural environment.
The Batwa Culture and Gorilla Lodge
Mount Gahinga Lodge was the first lodge built by Praveen Moman and opened in 2002.
It is the perfect base to go gorilla tracking on the Ugandan side of the Virungas, track the rare golden monkey, climb a volcano, walk through local villages and most of all to share the culture of the Batwa, the oldest inhabitants of the Central African rainforest.
The charming property, inspired by traditional design and building techniques, has been recently re-imagined: the lounge, dining room, and gardens have been remodeled, and two new deluxe bandas have been launched.
Visit the Cultural Heritage Site where Batwa community members demonstrate their local traditions such as fire-making or join the locals in a cultural group dance which regularly occur at the lodge.
Birdwatchers will enjoy ticking off their list from the comfort off the outdoor sitting area.
In 2018 Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust created The Gahinga Batwa Village, a major community project near Mount Gahinga Lodge, to provide a permanent home to over 120 of the Batwa community, who had been evicted when Mgahinga National Park was gazetted in 1991.
The project was financially supported by Volcanoes Safaris, the Adventure Conservation Travel Fund and private donations.
In 2018 Praveen Moman gave a TedX talk, entitled “Save Gorillas: Focus on Communities”, and argued that we need to change the paradigm of gorilla tourism and conservation and make them central to the economic mainstream so communities have a stake in the survival of the gorillas and habitat.

They are very welcome at the lodge, but please be advised we do not have childcare facilities. • Check out time for all guests is 11am.
