2025 Uganda Annual Cancer Run | A Beacon of Hope and Unity

The 2025 Cancer Run in Uganda is more than just a race; This race is a powerful symbol of hope, unity, and the relentless fight against cancer. Organized by Rotary International, this annual event has grown into one of the most significant fundraising and awareness campaigns in the country. This year’s run, set to take place on August 31 at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, promises to be the most impactful yet.

Since its inception, the Cancer Run has been a beacon of compassion and action. Over the years, this run has brought together thousands of participants from all walks of life, united by a common goal: to combat cancer and support those affected by it. The funds raised from the cancer run have been instrumental in establishing and maintaining cancer treatment facilities, such as the Rotary-Centenary Bank Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital.

This year’s Cancer Run Campaign has taken a global approach, with Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick launching a $1 million GoFundMe drive to tap into a worldwide audience. Urchick, whose personal connection to the cause adds a poignant touch, has been a driving force behind the initiative. Her mother succumbed to cancer, making this fight deeply personal for her. During her visit to Uganda, she praised the Rotarians for their unwavering dedication and highlighted the importance of global collaboration in the fight against cancer.

The 2025 Cancer Run has embraced digital innovation to enhance fundraising efforts. A new app allows participants to contribute virtually, making it easier for people around the world to support the cause. This digital drive was kickstarted by Urchick with a $100 donation, setting the tone for a successful campaign.

The success of the Cancer Run is also attributed to the strong support from the community and corporate partners. Organizations like Centenary Bank, USAID, and Next Media have pledged significant contributions, ensuring that the fight against cancer continues to gain momentum. The Vision Group, for instance, has committed UGX 70 million to the campaign, demonstrating the power of collective effort.

Despite the progress made, the fight against cancer in Uganda is far from over. The country still faces significant challenges, including the need for more advanced treatment facilities and early diagnosis programs. However, the spirit of the Cancer Run embodies hope and resilience. As Urchick aptly put it, “Together, we can defeat cancer”.

The 2025 Cancer Run is not just an event; it’s a movement. It represents the strength of a community coming together to make a difference. As thousands lace up their running shoes on August 31, they will be running not just for themselves, but for a future free from the scourge of cancer.
