Uganda Holds the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Workshop in Entebbe

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has taken a bold step toward a greener future for aviation by hosting a groundbreaking Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Feasibility Study Workshop in Entebbe, near Lake Victoria.

The two-day event held from April 22nd – 23rd, 2025, which was organized in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and supported by the Government of the United Kingdom (UK), marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050.

This workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the Uganda Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, air operators in Uganda, aviation fuel suppliers, and academic institutions.

Together, they explored Uganda’s potential to produce and adopt Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel that can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, according to International Civil Aviation Organization’s 2022 Sustainable Aviation Fuels Guide.

With its rich agricultural resources, Uganda is well-positioned to become a regional leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, potentially transforming both its aviation sector and Uganda’s economy.

In his opening remarks, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) Director General Mr. Fred K. Bamwesigye reaffirmed Uganda’s dedication to the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s environmental agenda.

“We are committed to the global aviation goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” Bamwesigye stated, emphasizing the dual benefits of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). “This initiative not only enhances environmental sustainability but also holds immense promise for generating socio-economic benefits across the country.”

Mr. Fred K. Bamwesigye’s leadership, backed by over a decade of experience in aviation, has been instrumental in driving Uganda’s proactive role in sustainable aviation practices.

The workshop featured presentations, discussions, and collaborative sessions aimed at evaluating the feasibility of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production in Uganda.

Attendees of the event, seated at round tables with red tablecloths, engaged in thoughtful exchanges, with some taking notes and others listening intently to speakers at the podium.

The event’s atmosphere was one of determination and optimism, as participants recognized the potential for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to address both environmental and economic challenges.
