Entebbe Zoo Bolsters Eco-Mobility with New Electric Hatchback Donation

The Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), popularly known as Entebbe Zoo, has taken a significant step toward sustainability with the addition of a sleek, 5-door, 4-seater pure electric hatchback to its eco-fleet. The vehicle, a generous donation from Mr. Tumuhimbise Bruce, was unveiled on May 9, 2025, at the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) in Entebbe Town, marking a milestone in the facility’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism.

The white electric hatchback, which joins the zoo’s existing fleet of eco-friendly golf carts, is designed for silent, zero-emission travel, making it an ideal fit for the 72-acre sanctuary that houses over 120 species of birds, 23 primate species, and iconic Africa wildlife animals like giraffes, rhinos, elephant the famous Shoebill Stork (which can be spotted during the Mabamba Swamp tour in a boat).

According to Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), the vehicle’s energy-smart technology aligns perfectly with the zoo’s mission to promote eco-mobility and reduce its carbon footprint, a pressing need in a region where urban pollution continues to rise; Kampala alone recorded a 15% increase in electric vehicle registrations in 2024, per the Ministry of Works and Transport.

Photos shared on X by Entebbe based Zoo @UWEC_EntebbeZoo reveal the hatchback’s modern design, featuring stylish LED taillights, a compact yet spacious build, and a minimalist interior wrapped in protective plastic, indicating its brand-new status. The car dashboard boasts a digital display, and the steering wheel is accented with a two-tone finish, blending functionality with aesthetics.

“The environment approves,” Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) stated in its post, emphasizing the vehicle’s role in fostering sustainable practices while enhancing visitor experiences. This initiative comes at a time when Uganda is doubling down on green technology to preserve its natural heritage.

Uganda Government has implemented subsidies and policies to encourage electric vehicle adoption, a move that has spurred growth in the Electronic Vehicle sector, particularly for last-mile delivery and eco-tourism, as noted in a recent Uganda Automotive Market Report by globalmonitor.us.

Entebbe Zoo’s’s adoption of this electric hatchback sets a precedent for other tourism operators in the region to follow in the attraction’s footsteps, blending conservation with innovative mobility solutions.

For visitors, this means a quieter, cleaner way to explore the zoo’s sprawling grounds, from the zoo’s natural forest trails to the diverse animal enclosures.

The Entebbe zoo, which opened in 1950 as a rehabilitation center for orphaned and injured wildlife, has long been a popular weekend destination for local tourists and a must-visit for international travelers waiting for flights at Entebbe International Airport.

With operating hours from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) recommends arriving by 4:00 PM for the best experience, including behind-the-scenes tours for those eager to learn more about the zoo’s conservation efforts.

The Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), commonly known as Entebbe Zoo in Entebbe Town, is strategically located just a short distance from Entebbe International Airport (Uganda National Airport) and approximately 36 km (about a 1-hour drive) from Kampala, making it an ideal starting point or stopover for travelers embarking on Uganda safaris.
