New Baby Gorilla Boosts Rwanda’s Conservation Success Story

In a heartwarming addition to Rwanda’s thriving mountain gorilla population, a new baby gorilla was born to mother Umoja of the Hirwa group in Volcanoes National Park, as announced by Volcanoes Safaris on June 12th, 2025.

The gorilla birth, captured in stunning photographs by local photographer Jean Marie Vianney Ndagiwenimana, brings the total number of mountain gorillas in Rwanda to over 600, a remarkable recovery from the species’ near-extinction status, when only 250 individuals remained in 1980.

The images, showing Umoja tenderly nurturing her newborn amidst the lush greenery of the park, have sparked global admiration and underscore decades of successful conservation efforts.

According to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the population resurgence is attributed to strict anti-poaching measures, habitat restoration, and sustainable tourism.

A 2023 World Economic Forum report highlights that tourism revenue, the cost of the gorilla trekking permits has generated millions to fund ranger patrols, community development, and biodiversity projects in Rwanda.

However, this success comes with new challenges. Conservationists note an increase in intergroup conflicts and human-wildlife interactions as the gorilla population grows.

To address this, the Volcanoes Community Resilience Project has been launched, channeling tourism funds into local infrastructure and education, benefiting over 10,000 community members in the past year alone.

“This birth is not just a win for wildlife but for the people who coexist with these gentle giants,” said a Rwanda Development Board (RDB) spokesperson.

Jean Marie Vianney Ndagiwenimana, whose photographs have brought this story to life, is no stranger to capturing Rwanda’s complex narratives.

Known for his work documenting the reconciliation between genocide survivors and perpetrators in 2017, Ndagiwenimana’s lens now turns to the natural world, offering a poignant contrast between Rwanda’s painful past and its hopeful ecological future.

As the world celebrates this new addition to the Hirwa group, experts urge continued investment in conservation corridors and disease prevention, given the gorillas’ vulnerability to human illnesses.

With the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund recently expanded in 2024 to support research and education, Rwanda remains a global model for balancing wildlife preservation with community prosperity.
