Day 1: Arrival in Masaka, Historical Sites, and Cultural Immersion

Morning: Travel from Kampala to Masaka

From 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM, depart Kampala and head to Masaka.

Transportation via private car hire (fits 4 people).

Distance: 130 km, 2-3 hours depending on traffic.

At 9:30 AM, arrive in Masaka City and check into your accommodation and freshen up.

Accommodation: Hotel Brovad, a mid-range option.

Alternative budget option: Masaka Backpackers.

Late Morning: Visit St. Bruno Sserunkuuma’s Birthplace

From 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, head to Ssaza-Masaka where you will visit the birthplace of St. Bruno Sserunkuuma.

Explore the modest blue house where Sserunkuuma was born in 1856. Reflect on his journey from a privileged background (son of the Buddu County chief) to a martyr executed on June 3rd, 1886 as shared by the local guide through oral histories.

Transport: From Masaka City to Ssaza (5-10 km), take a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi).

Lunch: Local Dining in Masaka

From 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, return to Masaka City for lunch at a local eatery.

Enjoy Ugandan staple foods like matoke (steamed bananas), groundnut sauce, and grilled chicken.

Afternoon: Buddu County Headquarters and Cultural Sites

From 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM visit the Buddu County Headquarters in Ssaza by walking or taking a short boda-boda ride.

While in Ssaza, explore the recently renovated headquarters, a cultural landmark of the Buganda Kingdom.

Learn about the administrative role of Buddu County during Sserunkuuma’s time and its significance in Buganda governance.

From 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM, explore nearby cultural sites in Masaka District.

For transportation a boda-boda will be hired for the afternoon.

Visit totem sites or caves formed by Lake Victoria’s geological activity. These sites offer insight into Buganda’s clan traditions and natural history.

Evening: Relax and Prepare for Martyrs’ Day

At 6:00 PM, return to your hotel in Masaka City via a boda-boda back to the City.

Dine at Hotel Brovad or a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Rest early or attend a local pre-Martyrs’ Day event, such as a prayer vigil, if available in Masaka. Check with your hotel for events.

Day 2: Uganda Martyrs’ Day and Lake Victoria Exploration

Morning: Travel to Namugongo Martyrs Shrine for Martyrs’ Day

From 5:00 AM – 7:30 AM, depart Masaka for Namugongo Martyrs Shrine (near Kampala).

Transport: Private hire is recommended due to the early start and Martyrs’ Day crowds.

Distance: 120 km, 2-3 hours.

From 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, participate in the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo.

Join thousands of pilgrims for the national liturgy at the Catholic Martyrs Shrine, where Sserunkuuma was executed in 1886.

Tip: Bring water, a hat, and wear comfortable shoes, as it’s a long event with lots of walking.

Lunch: On-Site at Namugongo

From 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, grab lunch from vendors at Namugongo.

Afternoon: Return to Masaka and Explore Lake Victoria Sites.

From 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, return to Masaka.

Transport: Private hire back

From 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, visit Lake Victoria sites in Bukakata Sub-County.

Transport: Boda-boda from Masaka to Bukakata

Explore caves or erosion-resistant stones formed by Lake Victoria’s activity. Optionally, take a short ferry ride toward the Ssese Islands (not a full trip, just for the experience).

Evening: Dinner and Departure

At 7:00 PM, return to Masaka City for dinner.

Transport: Boda-boda.

Dinner: At Hotel Brovad or a local restaurant.

At 8:00 PM, depart Masaka for Kampala.

Alternatively, stay another night in Masaka and depart the next day.
