Uganda is set to host one of Africa’s most audacious new adventure events. Race the Nile 2026, an 800-kilometre self-supported ultra-cycling expedition, will take place from 23rd – 28th November 2026, pushing riders through the rugged and culturally rich landscapes of the West Nile region.

This is not a typical supported cycling tour. With only 50 riders, the event is designed as a true test of endurance, navigation, and self-reliance across one of Uganda’s least explored frontiers.
Event Highlights
- Distance: 800 km
- Elevation Gain: Up to 10,900 metres
- Terrain: 97% gravel and dirt roads
- Start & Finish: Arua
- Format: Fully self-supported (GPS navigation, no aid stations)
Riders will traverse remote savannah, river valleys, and borderlands near South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The route passes through iconic conservation areas including Murchison Falls National Park, home to the dramatic Nile waterfall, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, and Ajai Wildlife Reserve, offering rare opportunities for wildlife encounters in a raw, untamed setting.

More Than Just a Race
Beyond the physical challenge, Race the Nile offers deep cultural immersion. Riders will cycle through villages inhabited by the Alur, Lugbara, Kakwa, Madi, Aringa, and Nubian communities, experiencing authentic local life at the edge of borders.
The event also carries a strong conservation legacy. Race the Nile 2026 supports rhino reintroduction efforts in Uganda, with the race winner earning the unique honour of naming a newly reintroduced white rhino at Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
Who Is Race the Nile 2026 For?
This extreme self-supported ultra-cycling event demands full self-sufficiency in food, water, bike repairs, navigation, and overnight logistics.

With temperatures soaring to 38°C and long stretches of isolation, it is as much a mental challenge as a physical one.
International participants will typically fly into Entebbe International Airport before connecting to Arua by domestic flight or road transfer.
Park Tours from Kampala or Entebbe
While preparing for or recovering from such an epic ride, many visitors combine their trip with classic park tours from Kampala or Entebbe.
Popular add-ons include game drives in Murchison Falls National Park, rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, or shorter safaris to Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
