Kampala recently hosted a landmark celebration of Uganda’s musical soul. On 31st July 2026, the gardens of the Sheraton Kampala Hotel came alive with the inaugural Ataakulaba Akunyooma Heritage Music Concert, an event dedicated to the timeless Kadongo Kamu tradition.
Kadongo Kamu, literally meaning “one little guitar,” is Uganda’s oldest mainstream music genre. Rooted in storytelling, social commentary, and the rhythmic pulse of a single acoustic guitar, it has long served as a powerful vehicle for sharing everyday life, history, and values in Luganda and other local languages. The concert paid tribute to this living heritage while bridging generations of artists.

The evening honoured two towering figures of the genre: veteran singer Mukadde Hadijah Namale and Mzee Dan Mugula. Their contributions helped shape Kadongo Kamu across decades, and the event spotlighted ongoing efforts to preserve their legacies through digitisation and modern distribution platforms.
Contemporary artists joined the stage, creating collaborations that kept the tradition vibrant and relevant for new audiences.
Organised with support from the Uganda Communications Commission and presented by Balunywa Promotions, the concert invited Ugandans and visitors alike to celebrate the country’s stories, culture, and music under the open sky of the Sheraton gardens.
Ticket options ranged from general admission to VIP and group tables, making the experience accessible while supporting initiatives that assist ageing music legends with housing, healthcare, and recognition.
For travellers, events like Ataakulaba Akunyooma offer a rare window into authentic Ugandan culture beyond the usual safari circuit.
Listening to Kadongo Kamu in its home setting provides deeper insight into the country’s social fabric and artistic resilience.
The garden venue at one of Kampala’s well-known hotels also made the evening comfortable and centrally located for both locals and international guests.
As interest in cultural and heritage tourism grows, experiences that respect and sustain local traditions become increasingly valuable.
Supporting artists, preserving oral and musical histories, and engaging thoughtfully with communities all contribute to more meaningful travel.
