World Tourism Day 2026

World Tourism Day 2026 Uganda: How AI Is Redesigning Tourism in Eastern Uganda

The landscape of global travel is shifting beneath our feet. Today, the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) in Uganda convened the World Tourism Day 2026 Thematic Conference under a forward-thinking theme: “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”

Industry leaders, digital visionaries, and hospitality stakeholders gathered at the National ICT Innovation Hub to discuss how technology is reshaping the traveler’s journey.

During the high-level panel discussions, the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) made one thing clear; Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant future prediction, it is actively transforming how we market the Pearl of Africa.

“AI (Artificial Intelligence) is already in the traveler’s pocket, shaping their itinerary before they have even spoken to a tour operator. This means our job is to ensure that the data these systems draw from tells Uganda’s story accurately.” Said Lwamafa Arthur, Senior Marketing Officer, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB)

Lwamafa Arthur further explained that travelers increasingly rely on Artificial Intelligence (AI) engines to filter destinations based on real-time reviews, accessibility, and niche interests.

If Uganda’s digital profiles are incomplete, the country risks being left out of automated itineraries entirely.

For Uganda Tourism Board’s Senior Digital Manager, Agaba Natasha, this technological evolution is a 50:50 partnership rather than a complete handover of human creativity to machines.

She emphasized that meaningful change starts with the digital footprints created by local institutions:

“If we, as a country and across our different institutions, can teach AI (Artificial Intelligence), then we can help change that narrative. We must intentionally feed accurate data, cultural nuances, and conservation updates into global networks so AI (Artificial Intelligence) can recommend Uganda accurately.” Said Agaba Natasha, Senior Digital Manager, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB)

By feeding rich, localized data into global search ecosystems, Uganda is taking control of its digital narrative to reach the right traveler at the exact right time.

Retracing the Footsteps: Past World Tourism Day Celebrations

Uganda’s strategy of decentralizing World Tourism Day celebrations has successfully put a spotlight on diverse regional cultures, hidden landscapes, and community-led conservation efforts.

  • 2025 (Arua, West Nile): Celebrated under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” showcasing the unique cultural tapestry and untapped wildlife potential of the West Nile sub-region.
  • 2024 (Kasese, Western Uganda): Focused on “Tourism and Peace,” highlighting the intersection of community livelihood, national park conservation, and cross-border harmony near the Rwenzori Mountains.
  • 2023 (Hoima, Bunyoro Kingdom): Under the global banner “Tourism and Green Investments,” emphasizing eco-tourism infrastructure and sustainable hospitality developments around the Albertine rift.

Eastern Uganda offers a stark contrast to the savannah plains of the west, trading traditional game drives for mist-shrouded peaks and roaring waterfalls.
