Great news for travelers exploring Uganda! The newly reconstructed Katonga Bridge on the vital Kampala-Masaka Highway is now fully open and 100% complete.
Designed to withstand future flooding, this upgraded structure restores reliable connectivity and significantly improves the journey for visitors heading to southwestern Uganda.
The original Katonga Bridge collapsed in May 2023 after heavy rains and flooding disrupted one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors.

For nearly three years, motorists relied on lengthy diversions. The reconstruction project, completed in early October 2026 at a cost of approximately UGX 191 billion by China Communications Construction Company in partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport, delivers a higher, longer, and more resilient elevated bridge plus 2.7 kilometres of approach roads.
Key improvements include road widening in sections from 7 metres to 11 metres and upgrades through the Lwera (11.6 km) and Kalandazi (1.5 km) swamp areas.
These enhancements strengthen the entire corridor, reducing travel time and making journeys safer and more comfortable.
For hospitality, travel, and tourism operators, the reopening is a major boost. The Kampala-Masaka Highway is a critical gateway linking the capital to Masaka City, the greater southwest, and onward routes toward Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.

Tourists can now enjoy smoother access to cultural sites, wildlife experiences, lakeside destinations, and community-based tourism initiatives in without the previous detours.
At Responsible Tourism Company, we celebrate infrastructure that supports sustainable travel. Better roads mean lower emissions from inefficient diversions, reduced stress for visitors, and stronger economic opportunities for local communities along the route.
This development aligns with responsible tourism principles by enhancing accessibility while encouraging travelers to explore Uganda more thoughtfully and support local economies.
Whether you are planning a self-drive adventure, a guided tour to Lake Mburo National Park, cultural visits in Masaka City, or onward travel into the southwest, the restored Katonga Bridge makes your itinerary more reliable and enjoyable.
