African Development Bank Funds Major Arua Airport Expansion to International Standards

In a major boost to Uganda’s aviation and tourism sector, the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has approved €155.99 million (approximately UGX 650-677 billion) to transform Arua Airport into a modern international-standard facility.

The funding, approved on 18th -19th June 2026, will finance Phase 1 of the Uganda Airports Development Programme.

This move aims to position Arua Airport as Uganda’s second international gateway, significantly improving regional connectivity, trade, and tourism in the West Nile sub-region.

Arua Airport Expansion Project Highlights

The ambitious upgrade includes:

  • A new 3.5 km paved runway capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Boeing 777.
  • A modern passenger terminal with capacity for 700,000 travellers annually.
  • A dedicated cargo terminal handling up to 25,000 tonnes of freight per year.
  • New taxiways, aircraft parking aprons, control tower, access roads, parking facilities, and advanced safety & security systems.

The total cost of Phase 1 is €157.76 million, with the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group providing the majority through a mix of loans, complemented by a Government of Uganda contribution.

Economic & Tourism Impact of the Arua Airport Expansion Project

Located about 450 km northwest of Kampala, Arua Airport serves as a strategic hub for cross-border trade with South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The expansion is expected to:

  • Lower transport costs for agricultural exports.
  • Create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.
  • Greatly improve access to major tourist attractions in the region, including national parks.

This development will make Arua a more convenient entry or exit point for travellers exploring Uganda’s northern wildlife destinations.

Perfect Timing for Uganda Tourism Growth

With improved flight connectivity, visitors will find it easier to combine stays in Kampala or Entebbe with seamless onward travel to the West Nile region and beyond.
