Mbale District is located in the Eastern region of Uganda. Mbale got its name after the largest city in the district, Mbale, which also serves as the main administrative and commercial center in the sub-region.

SOME HISTORY OF MBALE CITY, UGANDA

Mbale is a Municipality in Mbale District in the Eastern part of Uganda. It was established as a commercial centre for Arab slave traders and later attracted Indian traders who had come to East Africa to build the railway line. Eventually, Mbale became the Uganda Government's administrative centre for the Eastern region of Uganda.

ATTRACTIONS AND TOURISM ACTIVITIES IN MBALE CITY, UGANDA

Wanale Hill – This is a scenic hill located just outside Mbale town that offers beautiful views of the town and the surrounding countryside.

Mount Elgon – This is a dormant volcano that lies on the border of Uganda and Kenya. It has the second highest peak in Uganda and offers great hiking and trekking opportunities. The mountain is also home to various wildlife such as buffalo, elephants and leopards.

Sipi Falls – These are a series of three waterfalls situated on the slopes of Mount Elgon. The falls are accessed through a beautiful hiking trail that offers great views of the surrounding plains and valleys.

Nyero Rock Paintings – These are ancient rock paintings that date back to over 3,000 years ago. They are located in the Nyero Rock Site and are believed to have been created by early human settlers in the area.

Bamasaba Cultural Centre – This centre displays the rich cultural heritage of the Bamasaba people of Mbale. It features traditional dances, music and art and provides a great opportunity for tourists to learn about their culture.

Nabuyonga Cave – This is a historical site that was used as a hideout by the Bamasaba during the colonial era. It is located on the slopes of Mount Elgon and is accessed through a scenic hiking trail.

Mbale Central Market – This is a bustling market located in the heart of Mbale town. It offers a great opportunity for tourists to experience the local culture and buy souvenirs.

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre – This is a wildlife sanctuary that is home to various animals such as lions, elephants, and monkeys. It offers a great opportunity for tourists to see and learn about wildlife in Uganda.

Getting there

HOW TO GET TO MBALE CITY, UGANDA

This town lies about 235 km from Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. There are several minibuses that run to Eastern Uganda daily from Kampala taxi parks. Passengers can board from the Nakawa Taxi Park (a few kilometers from the city center) to head on this smooth and lovely journey through Mukono, Jinja, and Iganga towns. Bus companies such as Elgon Flyer (Colville Street), Teso Coach, and Galaxy Coaches also carry out business daily. The Post Bus leaves Kampala at 8 a.m. every day except on Sundays.

Getting around

GETTING AROUND MBALE CITY, UGANDA

The most common transportation options to move around Mbale in Uganda are boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis), matatus (shared taxis or minibuses), and private taxis. Boda-bodas are the quickest and most readily available, but they can be dangerous and may not be suitable for all travelers. Matatus are a cheaper option and operate on set routes, while private taxis offer more comfort and flexibility but are more expensive. It's important to negotiate prices with drivers beforehand and confirm the route before starting the trip.
