Kasese is a town in the Western Region of Uganda, serving as the capital of Kasese District. It lies North of Lake George and East of the Rwenzori Mountains.

The town is approximately 280 kilometers (170 miles) West of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city, and about 40 kilometers (25 miles) North-East of Mpondwe, a town at the international border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The coordinates of Kasese are approximately 0.18667°N, 30.08806°E.

Kasese originally grew around the copper mine at Kilembe. Later, attention shifted to cobalt mining.

The town is the chief town of Kasese District and serves as the district headquarters. Additionally, Kasese is the largest town in the Rwenzururu region.

Over the years, Kasese has experienced significant population growth. In 1969, the population was 7,213 and currently the population is estimated to be 93,329 which shows a significant increase in the number of people living in Kasese.
