KASESE TRAVEL GUIDE

LOCATION OF KASESE TOWN, UGANDA

Kasese is a town in the Western Region of Uganda, serving as the capital of Kasese District. It lies North of Lake George and East of the Rwenzori Mountains. The town is approximately 280 kilometers (170 miles) West of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city, and about 40 kilometers (25 miles) North-East of Mpondwe, a town at the international border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The coordinates of Kasese are approximately 0.18667°N, 30.08806°E.

Notably, it is the gateway to Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, making it a popular destination for tourists. Additionally, Kasese hosts the Kilembe Mines, which employs a large number of workers, and Hima Cement Limited, another significant employer located nearby.

POPULATION OF KASESE TOWN, UGANDA

The population of Kasese in 2024 is estimated to be 93,329. Kasese is one of the 20 cities in Uganda and ranks fifth in terms of population within the country.

HISTORY OF KASESE TOWN, UGANDA

Kasese originally grew around the copper mine at Kilembe. Later, attention shifted to cobalt mining. It is the chief town of Kasese District and serves as the district headquarters. Additionally, Kasese is the largest town in the Rwenzururu region.

Over the years, Kasese has experienced significant population growth. In 1969, the population was 7,213 and currently the population is estimated to be 93,329 which shows a significant increase in the number of people living in Kasese.

Factors contributing to this growth include increased tourism (as Kasese is the gateway to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park), employment opportunities at Kilembe Mines, and trade with the Eastern districts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
