Lake Mutanda is a small freshwater lake located in southwestern Uganda, specifically in Kisoro District.
The lake is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain Range, at an altitude of 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level. It lies approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the town of Kisoro, where the district headquarters are situated. The coordinates of Lake Mutanda are 01°14’06"S, 29°40’12"E.
SOME HISTORY OF LAKE MUTANDA, UGANDA
Lake Mutanda, located in Kisoro District, southwestern Uganda, has an intriguing history. Here’s is some of the history of Lake Mutanda;
Several thousand years ago, a lava flow from the Virunga Volcanoes dammed the Rutshuru River, leading to the creation of Lake Mutanda. This natural process shaped the lake’s contours and landscape.
Lake Mutanda’s waters are too cold for crocodiles, making it a safe haven for other aquatic life. Interestingly, hippos once inhabited the area, but they were hunted to extinction in the 1990s.
Lake Mutanda which is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain Range at an altitude of 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) offers breathtaking views of three volcanoes namely; Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Gahinga. These peaks, partly located in Uganda, grace the horizon from the lake’s shores. The lake boasts several islands, adding to its natural beauty. The environment supports diverse wildlife, including the endangered mountain gorilla. Birdwatchers can spot kingfishers, kites, ibis, and Uganda’s national bird, the crested crane. Weaver bird nests adorn the reeds along the shore. Additionally, various reptile and amphibian species thrive here.
Historical Note: Hippopotamuses were last sighted in the area in 1994.
