LOCATION OF MATHENIKO GAME RESERVE, UGANDA
Matheniko Wildlife Reserve is located in the North-Eastern part of Uganda, within the Karamoja sub-region. It spans an area of approximately 1,520 square kilometers (590 square miles) and is situated in Moroto District. The reserve is part of a corridor of protected areas that includes Kidepo Valley National Park, Bokora Wildlife Reserve, and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. Its northeastern boundary lies along the Uganda-Kenya border.
SOME HISTORY OF MATHENIKO GAME RESERVE, UGANDA
Matheniko Wildlife Reserve was established as part of Uganda’s efforts to conserve its unique biodiversity and protect endangered species. The reserve is part of a larger network of protected areas in the Karamoja region, which includes Kidepo Valley National Park, Bokora Wildlife Reserve, and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. This network forms a crucial wildlife corridor that supports the movement and survival of various species.
The reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including antelopes such as the Bright’s gazelle, lesser kudu, and roan antelope. It also hosts primates like olive baboons and vervet monkeys, as well as carnivores such as cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Bird species in the reserve include the Abyssinian ground hornbill, Verreaux’s eagle, and the Egyptian vulture.
