Britam Insurance Fuels Corporate Sponsorship Trend in East African Sports with Rwenzori Marathon Partnership

In a significant boost for East African sports, Britam Insurance Uganda, led by Chief Executive Officer Allan Mafabi, has deepened its commitment to the Rwenzori Marathon, marking a notable trend in corporate sponsorship within the region.

This run partnership, highlighted by a recent meeting at Britam’s headquarters in Nakasero in Kampala – Uganda Capital, underscores a growing alliance between corporate entities and sports events, with potential ripple effects for tourism and local economies.

A Rising Trend in Corporate Backing

According to a 2022 study by the East African Sports Federation, only 12% of sports events in the East Africa region secure corporate sponsorship.

Britam’s involvement with the Tuskerlite Rwenzori Marathon, an annual sporting event in Uganda tourism activities Calender attracting over 5,000 runners in its 2024 edition, challenges this statistic.

Britam Insurance giant has committed UGX 100 million, including cash and comprehensive travel insurance, aligning with its branding strategy spearheaded by regional head of Branding and Marketing, Dorcas Qorir.

This move coincides with the launch of Britam’s Easy Earner Dollar product, suggesting a strategic play to tap into Uganda’s expanding middle class, as noted in the World Bank’s 2023 report.

The Rwenzori Marathon, held in Kasese Town near the majestic Mount Rwenzori Ranges, is more than a race, it is an economic catalyst.

A 2023 University of Makerere economic impact assessment estimated that past editions injected approximately USD 250,000 into local economies, highlighting the marathon event’s potential to drive growth in underserved regions.

Tourism Boost: Mount Rwenzori Tours from Kasese and Beyond

The partnership opens doors for tourism, particularly with Mount Rwenzori tours from Kasese gaining traction.

Adventure seekers can now combine the marathon with trekking tours in Uganda, exploring the third-highest peak in Africa, nestled in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Responsible Tourism Company offers customized transfers and guided treks, with luxury accommodations at Margherita Hotel Kasese, enhancing the appeal of Kasese tourism.

For those seeking a broader safari experience, the 3-Day Queen Elizabeth National Park Safari from Kampala City, Uganda provides an enticing add-on.

This itinerary includes game drives amidst diverse wildlife – hippos, Uganda kobs, and over 500 bird species, along with stops at the Equator and scenic Rift Valley landscapes, making it a must-do for visitors.

Cultural Experiences in Kasese

Beyond the trails, Kasese tourism is enriched by cultural experiences. Visitors can witness traditional salt-making at Lake Katwe or hike to Sebwe Falls, guided by local experts like Joel and Jackson, who offer authentic insights into the region’s heritage.

These activities, combined with the marathon’s community engagement, position Kasese as a multifaceted destination.

Amos Wekesa, team lead of the Rwenzori Marathon, expressed gratitude for Britam’s support, noting that the collaboration is opening global doors.

With heads of Human Resources Bettie Mwagale and Marketing Laston Lutha present at the meeting, the partnership signals a long-term commitment to promoting health, safety, and empowerment in the Rwenzori region.

As corporate sponsorship trends gain momentum, Britam’s investment could set a precedent for other firms to back sports and tourism initiatives across East Africa.

For now, the Rwenzori Marathon stands as a beacon of opportunity, blending athleticism with the allure of Mount Rwenzori tours, trekking tours in Uganda, and cultural immersion in Kasese.
