MV NODL Victoria passenger ferry operated by Nation Oil Distributors Limited together with the Uganda Ministry of Works and Transport launched a new ferry service on Nakiwogo (Entebbe) – Bukakkata (Masaka) route
According to the ferry transportation operator media release, MV MV NODL Victoria introduced the ferry service as a result of travel disruption at Katonga Bridge between Kampala – Masaka road and rest of western.
The ongoing rain season in Uganda and flashflood caused water levels rise, forcing it to damage the Katonga river bridge along Kampala – Masaka route
“The new passenger ferry service aims to address the public’s travel ‘concerns resulting from the recent floods at River Katonga, which have significantly disrupted travel between Masaka, Mpigi, and Kampala.”
Effective Monday 15th May 2023, MV NODL Victoria will operate daily between Nakiwogo pier near Entebbe Town and Bukakkata Port near Masaka City –
Bukakkata is a popular landing site for the ferry vessels that travels daily, between Bukakkata and Kalangala, connecting the Ssese Islands esp Buggala Island and the Mainland including Bukakkata Central Market, Masaka in Central Uganda.
The new MV MV NODL Victoria FERRY service connecting Entebbe to Masaka is expected to offer a reliable transportation option during the Katonga bridge breakdown until the planned restoration by Uganda National Road Authority are done.
Passengers and cargo from Kampala travelling to Western region through Masaka city, can also take the road route from Kampala – Mpigi – Gomba – Masaka and onwards.
With the lack of road connection through the main Kampala – Masaka road route through Katonga bridge, has meant that passenger and goods spend longer hours in traffic due to the increase vehicle number having to go through the Masaka – Gomba – Mpigi road.
