Hoima Gears Up for Kabalega Independence Week 2025

As the clock ticks toward October 2025, the Kabalega Foundation is set to host Kabalega Independence Week 2025, a vibrant celebration honoring the legacy of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega, the 19th-century Bunyoro king renowned for his resistance against British colonial rule.

Scheduled from October 2nd to 4th in Hoima City, this week-long event promises a blend of cultural showcases, a community run, an innovation expo, and a memorial lecture, drawing thousands to the heart of Uganda’s oil-rich Albertine region.

A Legacy of Resilience

Omukama Kabalega, who ruled Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom from 1870 to 1899, continues to inspire with his dedication to sovereignty and service.

The Kabalega Foundation, in partnership with the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, aims to preserve this heritage while fostering community development.

With over 3,500 individuals impacted by its programs, including the Community Skills Development Programme, the foundation is bridging historical pride with modern empowerment.

A centerpiece of the event is the Kabalega Independence Run on October 5th, 2024, which will double as a critical blood donation drive in collaboration with the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS).

Uganda faces a persistent blood shortage, with only 1% of its population donating annually, far below the World Health Organization’s recommended 5%.

This initiative seeks to address this gap, potentially saving lives affected by malaria, childbirth complications, and road accidents, which are prevalent in the region.

Hoima’s Economic Boom as a Backdrop

Nestled in the Albertine region, Hoima has transformed since the 2006 discovery of 6.5 billion barrels of oil. The city’s population has surged to 143,304, driving infrastructure growth and economic diversification amid Uganda’s traditionally agrarian economy.

However, this boom has also widened social disparities, with skyrocketing rents pushing locals to city outskirts, raising concerns about slums and social issues like crime and unemployment.
