Joshua Cheptegei Leads the Charge at the Mount Elgon Half Marathon 2025

On November 1st, 2025, the misty slopes of Mount Elgon in Uganda became the stage for an extraordinary event, the third annual Elgon Half Marathon, spearheaded by Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei.

The third annual Elgon Half Marathon, organized by the Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other key stakeholders, transcended traditional racing by weaving together themes of climate action, gender-based violence prevention, and youth empowerment.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) celebrated the event’s conclusion, highlighting its role in fostering conservation, tourism, and community development under the banner #RunWithJoshua.

Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano and one of East Africa’s oldest geological formations, offers a destination unlike any other.

This tourist attraction’s vast 4,000 km² base, the largest of any volcano globally, and its elevation of 4,321 meters make it a biodiversity hotspot and a cultural treasure.

Mount Elgon’s cool, high-altitude climate contrasts sharply with the surrounding plains, providing a refuge for unique flora and fauna, including over 300 bird species and small antelopes.

This transboundary conservation area, shared with Kenya and designated as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man & Biosphere Reserve, underscores its global significance.
