A major milestone for Uganda’s tourism and trade sectors was achieved this week as the Ministry of Works and Transport signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China State Engineering Construction Company to upgrade Kasese Airport into an international airport.
The announcement, shared by Ms. Susan Kataike on X, has sparked excitement among travelers, local businesses, and tourism stakeholders eager to see the Western Region of Uganda become a global travel hub.
Located at the foothills of the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, often called the “Mountains of the Moon,” and near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kasese Airport in Kasese Town is strategically positioned to unlock the region’s tourism potential.
Kasese airport currently facilitates daily domestic flights from Entebbe International Airport (Uganda’s major airport in Entebbe Town), Kajjansi Airfield, and Murchison Falls National Park (Uganda’s largest wildlife safari park), serving international tourists visiting the nearby Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda.
Once upgraded, Kasese International Airport is expected to handle cross-border air traffic from East African Community member states, promoting regional tourism and trade. The Kasese Airport project, prefinanced by China State Engineering Construction Company, involves a comprehensive review of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority’s masterplan, followed by the development of detailed designs for the airport.
Kasese Airport’s upgrade aligns with Uganda’s broader infrastructure goals, including the Uganda government’s designation of five upcountry airports as international entry/exit points to enhance tourism, as noted by Uganda Invest.
The initiative also complements ongoing efforts to improve regional infrastructure, such as the proposed Western Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kasese and road improvements like the Kasese Town – Fortportal City route, which locals have urged to be prioritized alongside the Kasese International airport project.
Tourism in the Rwenzori region has long been constrained by inadequate infrastructure. According to a report by Uganda’s Ministry of Tourism, the number of visitors to Rwenzori Mountains National Park has stagnated at around 2,000 annually, compared to 52,000 for Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro in 2013.
Challenges such as poor road access, slippery trails, and limited accommodation have hindered growth, despite the region’s unique offerings including snow-capped peaks on the Uganda Equator, diverse wildlife, and cultural heritage.
The Kasese airport upgrade is expected to address these bottlenecks by improving access for international travelers, encouraging investment in eco-friendly accommodations, and supporting initiatives like the Rwenzori Marathon and Theluji Festival.

The involvement of China State Engineering Construction Company continues a trend of Chinese investment in Ugandan infrastructure, following projects like the Kapchorwa-Suam Road upgrade and hydroelectric developments by firms like Sinohydro.

Rwenzori Tourism Development Project.
