SOME HISTORY OF KALIRO TOWN, UGANDA
Kaliro Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, has a rich and evolving history. It serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Kaliro District, which was carved out of Kamuli District in 2006.
Kaliro’s history is deeply intertwined with the Busoga sub-region. The town is home to the palace of Ezekieri Tenywa Wako Zibondo IX, the Isebantu (King) of Busoga from 1893 to 1952. This palace, built in 1930, is a significant historical landmark. Additionally, the Buguge historical site, located about 15 kilometers North of Kaliro, is believed to have been the settlement of the first Lamogi (Chief) from the Babiito rulers of the Biito Dynasty of Bunyoro.
Kaliro District, where the town is situated, was officially established in 2006. The district headquarters are located in Kaliro Town, making it a central hub for administrative activities. The district comprises two counties: Bulamogi County and Bulamogi North West County, with a total of 11 sub-counties and one town council.
Kaliro is approximately 40 kilometers North of Iganga and about 153 kilometers North-East of Kampala, Uganda’s capital1. The town is situated at an elevation of 1,080 meters (3,540 feet) above sea level. The district experiences a bimodal type of rainfall, with peaks in March-June and August-November, and average annual temperatures ranging from 19°C to 25°C.
Kaliro has seen significant development over the years. The town hosts the National Teachers’ College Kaliro, one of the five government teacher training institutions for secondary school teachers in Uganda1. The central market and various administrative offices also contribute to the town’s economic activities.
Despite its growth, Kaliro faces challenges such as soil infertility and degradation due to over-exploitation of resources and poor land use practices. The district’s vegetation is predominantly a forest/Savannah mosaic, which has been affected by farming, timber, and fuel harvesting. Kaliro Town’s history reflects a blend of cultural heritage, administrative significance, and ongoing development, making it a notable location in Uganda’s Eastern Region.
