SOME HISTORY OF KATAKWI TOWN, UGANDA

Katakwi Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Katakwi District. The town is situated approximately 52 kilometers Northeast of Soroti, the largest city in the Teso sub-region.

Katakwi was originally part of Soroti District until 1997 when Katakwi District was created. The district was formed to better manage the administrative needs of the area, which includes the Iteso and Kumam ethnic groups.

Over the years, Katakwi Town has seen significant growth. The population has steadily increased from about 5,900 in 2002 to approximately 8,400 in 2011, and it continues to grow. This growth can be attributed to its strategic location and the development of infrastructure such as roads and public services.

The economy of Katakwi Town is primarily based on subsistence agriculture and pastoral animal husbandry. In recent years, there have been efforts to introduce commercial agriculture, with crops like cassava, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, and simsim being cultivated.

The town continues to develop with improvements in infrastructure, such as the Soroti–Katakwi–Moroto–Lokitanyala Road, which passes through the middle of the town, enhancing connectivity and trade.

Katakwi Town’s history is a testament to its resilience and growth, making it an important center in the Teso sub-region.
