SOME HISTORY OF BUYENDE TOWN, UGANDA

Buyende Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Buyende District. The town’s history is closely tied to the administrative changes in the region.

Buyende was originally part of Kamuli District. The area that is now Buyende District was known as Budiope County. In 1974, Budiope became a county when Bugabula County of Busoga District Administration was divided to create two other counties: Buzaaya and Budiope. These, along with Bulamogi, formed North Busoga District of Busoga Province.

Buyende District was officially created by an Act of Parliament and became operational on July 1, 2010. The creation of the district was driven by the need to bring services closer to the people, as residents in the Northern parts of Kamuli District had to travel long distances to access services at the district headquarters in Kamuli.

The name “Buyende” is derived from Mr. Nyende, a prince and prominent chief in the area. The prefix “Bu-” is a common linguistic feature in the region, indicating “place of,” thus “Buyende” means "place of Nyende".

Since its establishment, Buyende Town has faced several challenges, including a lack of piped potable water, absence of a sewerage system, inadequate electricity distribution, and poor waste management. Despite these challenges, the town has been working towards improving its infrastructure and services to better serve its residents.

Buyende is part of the Busoga sub-region, which is coterminous with the Busoga Kingdom, one of Uganda’s constitutional monarchies. The town and district play a significant role in the cultural and administrative landscape of the Busoga region.
