Iganga is a town located in the Eastern Region of Uganda. It serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Iganga District. The town is situated in the Busoga sub-region, approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) North-East of Jinja, along the highway between Jinja and Tororo.

SOME HISTORY OF IGANGA TOWN, UGANDA
Iganga Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, has a rich and diverse history. It serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Iganga District, which is part of the Busoga sub-region.
Iganga was originally part of the larger Busoga Kingdom, which is one of the traditional kingdoms in Uganda. The town’s location along the main highway between Jinja and Tororo made it a significant trading post even before colonial times.
During the colonial period, Iganga became more prominent due to its strategic location. The British colonial administration established administrative offices in the town, which facilitated its growth. The construction of the railway line that passed through Iganga further boosted its importance as a commercial hub.
After Uganda gained independence in 1962, Iganga continued to grow. In 1975, it gained district status and was initially named South Busoga District. However, in 1980, it was renamed Iganga District. The town has since developed into one of the fastest-growing towns in Uganda, with improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
In recent years, Iganga has seen significant development. The town now boasts several internet cafes, guest houses, and a bustling market. It is also home to Iganga General Hospital, which serves the residents of the municipality and the surrounding district. Efforts have been made to improve emergency medical services, including the development of a lay first responder program in collaboration with international organizations.
Iganga is a melting pot of cultures, primarily influenced by the Basoga people. The town has various religious buildings, including churches and mosques, reflecting its diverse religious makeup. The local market is a vibrant place where people from different backgrounds come together to trade goods and services.
Iganga’s history is a testament to its resilience and adaptability, making it a key town in Uganda’s Eastern Region.
