SOME HISTORY OF KAMULI TOWN, UGANDA

Kamuli Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, has a rich and diverse history. It serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Kamuli District, which is part of the Busoga sub-region.

Kamuli’s history is deeply intertwined with the Busoga Kingdom, one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms. The area has been inhabited by the Basoga people for centuries. The town’s name, “Kamuli,” is derived from the Lusoga word for “a place of many trees,” reflecting its lush environment.

During the colonial period, Kamuli became an important administrative center under British rule. The town’s strategic location made it a focal point for colonial administration and trade. Infrastructure development, such as roads and administrative buildings, began during this time, laying the foundation for the town’s growth.

After Uganda gained independence in 1962, Kamuli continued to develop as a key administrative and commercial hub. The town witnessed significant growth in population and infrastructure. In 1974, Kamuli District was officially created, with Kamuli Town as its headquarters.

In recent years, Kamuli has seen further development in various sectors. The town now hosts several important institutions, including Kamuli General Hospital and Kamuli Mission Hospital. The establishment of Kamuli Sugar Limited, a major sugar factory, has also contributed to the town’s economic growth.

Kamuli is notable for being the birthplace of several prominent Ugandan figures, including Rebecca Kadaga, the former Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda.

Kamuli Town’s history is a testament to its resilience and growth, evolving from a small settlement to a significant urban center in Uganda.
