SOME HISTORY OF KUMI TOWN, UGANDA
Kumi Town, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, serves as the main municipal, administrative, and commercial center of Kumi District.
Kumi Town is part of the Teso sub-region, which has a rich cultural heritage. The area was traditionally inhabited by the Iteso people, who are known for their pastoral and agricultural lifestyle. The town’s establishment as a significant center began during the colonial period when the British administration set up administrative units across Uganda.
During the British colonial rule, Kumi Town developed as an administrative hub. The colonial government established infrastructure such as roads and administrative offices to facilitate governance and control over the region. This period also saw the introduction of formal education and healthcare services, which laid the foundation for the town’s growth.
After Uganda gained independence in 1962, Kumi Town continued to grow. The government invested in infrastructure development, including the construction of roads and public buildings. The town became a focal point for trade and commerce in the region, attracting businesses and settlers from surrounding areas.
Kumi Town is strategically located on the Tororo-Mbale-Soroti Road, making it accessible and a key transit point in the region. The town’s green vegetation and swamps add to its scenic beauty, making it a pleasant place to live and visit.
Kumi Town continues to evolve, balancing its rich cultural heritage with modern development, making Kumi an important part of Uganda’s Eastern Region.
