Mbarara, the bustling capital of Western Uganda, is stepping into the spotlight with the official launch of the Western Uganda Film Association, Festival, and Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO).

The milestone event, hosted at Lasvegas Garden Hotel, was spearheaded by Amb. Rosa Malango, Uganda’s Special Presidential Envoy for Tourism & Trade.
The launch featured vibrant Uganda Federation of Movie Industry (UFMI) banners and brought together local dignitaries, creatives, and tourism stakeholders eager to position Mbarara as a rising hub for film production and cultural storytelling.
Rich Heritage Meets Modern Creative Industry
Known affectionately as the “Land of Milk and Honey,” Mbarara boasts a deep historical legacy.
The region is home to the documented 1520 Biharwe Eclipse, one of the earliest precisely dated events in the Great Lakes Region.

Mbarara also played a key role in colonial history with the 1901 Ankole Agreement and the founding of Mbarara High School in 1911.
Amb. Malango highlighted plans to integrate film production into the Mbarara SME Park (Small and Medium Enterprises) and create employment opportunities for graduates from the Rushozi Regional Industrial Hub.
This strategic move aims to link the region’s strong heritage, skilled workforce, and growing creative industry.
The new Film Festival is expected to attract filmmakers, tourists, and investors, further elevating Western Uganda as a must-visit destination beyond traditional wildlife safaris.
