On 14th March 2026, an extraordinary wildlife exploration took place on Musambwa Island, a culturally protected island located within Lake Victoria.

The island is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity, hosting thousands of Grey-headed gull alongside a fascinating variety of reptiles.
The expedition offered participants a rare opportunity to experience one of Uganda’s most unique eco-tourism destinations, where conservation, culture, and community coexist.
Hands-On Snake Conservation Experience in Uganda
Led by snake conservation expert James Ntulume from Snakes Uganda, the exploration provided hands-on learning about reptiles in their natural habitat.
A standout moment included observing a Congo File Snake drinking water, an unusual behavior that sparked curiosity and transformed perceptions among participants.
Through guided sessions, attendees learned:
- The ecological importance of snakes
- Their role in maintaining ecosystem balance
- The need to protect reptiles through education and awareness
What started as fear quickly evolved into appreciation for these often misunderstood species.
Community Coexistence and Sustainable Tourism
Beyond wildlife, Musambwa Island is home to a fishing community that has successfully learned to coexist with nature.

This balance highlights the importance of community-based tourism, where conservation efforts support livelihoods while preserving biodiversity.
Uganda continues to promote such models through institutions like:
- Uganda Wildlife Authority
- Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities
Wildlife Education Through Reptile Studycations
Participants who joined the expedition were awarded certificates in recognition of their courage and willingness to learn.
Organized by Birders Lens, these reptile “studycations” are designed to connect people with wildlife in meaningful ways.
By combining education with experience, they inspire a deeper commitment to conservation.

Why Musambwa Island Matters for Uganda Tourism
As global travelers increasingly seek authentic and sustainable experiences, Musambwa Island stands out as a destination that offers:
- Rare reptile encounters
- Exceptional birdwatching opportunities
- Cultural immersion with local communities
- Untouched natural ecosystems
The island represents the future of responsible tourism in Uganda, where education and conservation go hand in hand.
