Good news came in this morning from the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Uganda that another rhino calf was born on 27 December, the 20th since the sanctuary was established in the early part of the century. The birth gives a boost to promoting Uganda as a big five destination in Eastern Africa.
According to a Facebook post shared on the Rhino Fund Uganda Facebook Page; “Rhino Fund Uganda is proud to announce that Luna (born here on the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the 2nd April 2014) gave birth to a healthy baby GIRL!! fathered by our territorial male Moja at 0230hrs this morning. This beautiful wee girl is the 20th Rhino to be born on the sanctuary, increasing our number to 25 Southern White Rhino!! #babies #babyrhino #uganda #ugandawildlifeauthority #sanctuary #whiterhino #savetherhino“
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is 70 sqkm enclosed area in Nakasongola, strategically located between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park, operated by Rhino Fund Uganda in cooperative agreement with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Six founder white rhinos were introduced in 2005 and 2006, from which the population has grown to 25 in 2018, making a visit to Ziwa an absolute must for tourists coming to Uganda.
The Southern White rhino species, while not originally present in Uganda – the Northern White rhino subspecies was resident in Uganda until poached to extinction in the early 1980’s – is the most populous of the few remaining subspecies in Africa, followed by the Eastern Black rhino species.
As and when the population on Ziwa has grown enough will the Rhino Fund Uganda in conjunction with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (the wildlife and conservation body) then prepare a second secured sanctuary in one of the national parks – Murchison and Kidepo are under consideration – and begin to relocate a breeding stock there to build on the success of the programme established at Ziwa and ensure a sustained future for rhinos in Uganda.
Our responsible tours include Uganda adventure holiday safaris to Murchison Falls National Park, with a visit Ziwa where visitors can participate in a guided rhino walking safari in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to get close encounter with the rhinos on foot.
Make an online reservation for rhino walking safaris to track rhinos on foot in Uganda’s only rhino sanctuary and safari lodge package from USD 295.
