Tanzania will host the East African Community (EAC) regional tourism expo in October, the country’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Damas Ndumbaro announced Friday 16 July 2021.
The tourism expo will be held in Tanzania northern tourist city of Arusha, Ndumbaro told a virtual meeting of the East African Community Council of Ministers for Tourism.
Ndumbaro said Tanzania offered to hold the tourism expo in Arusha after Burundi stated that it was not ready to host the regional tourism expo for 2021.
The East African Community Regional Tourism Expo, the first of its kind to be held in the east African region, is aimed at promoting tourism attractions available in the East African Community member countries of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.
Setting to recover from COVID-19 pandemic impacts on tourism and wildlife conservation, the East African regional states have designed and adopted Regional COVID-19 Tourism Recovery Plan that seeks to revive travel and tourism sector badly hit by the global pandemic.
Ndumbaro said the regional tourism expo will also help to encourage tourism stakeholders, especially the private sector, to work out strategies aimed at reviving the sector that has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tourism industry is East Africa’s bread and butter. Tourism in the East African Community hold about 10% of the regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 17 percent export earnings and seven percent (7%) jobs creation.
“The pandemic has resulted in the collapse of many tourist companies and the subsequent lay-offs of employees,” said the minister.
The annual EAC Regional Tourism Expo (EARTE) is being introduced with the aim of improving the visibility of the region and marketing it as a single tourist destination.
