Since the activity’s inaugural run in September 2022, the Rwenzori Marathon has evolved into a powerful platform for promoting healthy living, boosting tourism, and supporting local communities in the Rwenzori Sub-region.

The event, which crosses the Equator, offers runners breathtaking views of the Rwenzori Ranges, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Lake George, making it one of Africa’s most scenic marathons.

This year, with the majority of participants coming from abroad, the marathon is poised to bring a significant influx of foreign exchange, helping to strengthen the Ugandan shilling. The event’s organizers aim to attract over 3,000 runners this year, building on the success of the 2024 edition, which saw significant growth in participation.

Beyond the race itself, the marathon has sparked a broader conversation about tourism’s role in fostering peace and reconciliation in the region.

Kasese, Uganda which has faced challenges from conflicts driven by resource disputes and ethnic tensions, is leveraging events like the Rwenzori Marathon to showcase its rich cultural and natural heritage.

As highlighted in a recent Daily Monitor newspaper article, tourism initiatives in Kasese are helping to promote dialogue and understanding among communities, positioning the town as a hub for peacebuilding and economic growth. Wekesa also teased an upcoming reveal of the 2025 marathon kit design, promising a look that runners will love.

With the local registration push set to begin next month, Ugandans are expected to join the international crowd in large numbers, further amplifying the event’s impact.  The marathon’s success is a testament to the vision of its organizers, who see it as a driving force for positive change in the region, aligning with Uganda’s broader tourism goals.

In 2023, tourism contributed 7.7% to Uganda’s GDP, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, and events like the Rwenzori Marathon are helping to sustain that momentum.

As Kasese prepares to welcome the world, the town’s transformation and the marathon’s growing popularity underscore the power of sport to bridge cultures, boost economies, and inspire change. Whether you’re a runner or a traveler, the 2025 Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon is shaping up to be an unmissable celebration of athleticism and community spirit.
