5 Days Mahoma Trail Hiking Tour | Rwenzori Mountains Wilderness Camping, Uganda
The Mahoma Trail (also called the Mahoma Loop or Mahoma Nature Trail) is one of the most rewarding short hiking routes in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, offering a deep immersion into Uganda’s montane ecosystems without technical climbing.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of Uganda's most extraordinary and underrated gems. This UNESCO World Heritage Site (designated in 1994) and Ramsar wetland (2008) protects nearly 1,000 km² of the Rwenzori mountain range in southwestern Uganda, along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This national park is home to Africa's third-highest peak, Margherita Peak (5,109 m) on Mount Stanley, and features some of the continent's last equatorial glaciers (though they're retreating rapidly due to climate change).
Rwenzori Mountains National Park stands out for its dramatic altitudinal zonation: five distinct vegetation belts create a surreal, otherworldly landscape that changes dramatically as you ascend, from lush montane rainforest and bamboo thickets to giant heather moorlands, Afro-alpine zones with bizarre giant lobelias and groundsels, and rocky, glacier-capped summits.
This 5-day itinerary begins in Kampala, travels west to Kasese, and continues into the forested foothills of the Rwenzori range.
Along the trail, hikers encounter diverse flora and fauna including primates, rare bird species, giant lobelias, helichrysum flowers, and evidence of mountain elephants.
The highlight of the trek is Mahoma Lake, a tranquil alpine lake surrounded by dramatic peaks such as Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and the Portal Peaks on clear days.
This tour is designed for responsible travelers who value conservation, local communities, and low-impact trekking while enjoying professional guiding and wilderness camping.
