Itinerary
Day 1 & 2: Visit Murchison Falls National Park
We begin our expedition to Murchison Falls National Park through the Southern route entry gate- Kichubanyobo, at 7:00am. The journey is just slightly over 230km therefore arrival time is 11:00am. After two hours of driving, we stop at Migyera for refreshments. As soon as we arrive, we start taking pictures at every special moment.
The park is known for having the world's most powerful waterfalls that emit large volumes of water estimated to be 300 cubic meters per second causing the surrounding to tremble as tourists are left gazing in awe. The park offers a variety of activities including but not limited to; hiking, trekking, a boat cruise on the Nile and game drives. At 6:00pm the team checks-in at one of the park hotels.
Day 3: Fort Patiko and Aruu Falls
As early as 8:00am we begin the 180km journey to Gulu via the Kampala - Gulu highway. At one hour and a half of driving, we stop at Kamdini where a number of food items such as roasted chicken, meat, rolex, plantain, simsim paste, groundnut paste, honey, fruits and drinks are sold. By 11:00am we arrive at Fort Patiko, also known as Baker's Fort. This was a military fort built by Samuel Baker in 1872 with an aim of eradicating slave trade. A plaque on the remaining wall of a grain storage building in the centre of the fort reads, "Fatiko 1872 - 88, founded by Sir Samuel Baker, occupied by Emin and Gordon" (sic). The activities of this rocky site include hiking, site seeing among others. Ruins of the fort remain in Ajulu parish, Patiko sub-county, Aswa county, Gulu district. The site is open to the public subject to a fee levied by the sub-county.
Aruu Falls: Located along Agago river that flows from Agago into Lapaya village in Pader district, Aruu falls are some of Uganda's hidden treasures. The falls are located within a forest and a ragged rocky area offering a perfect experience for those who love challenging adventure and the thrills of victory that come along.
The falls offer a spectacular view as the water splashes off the rocks, turning it into a beautiful sheet of falling water. The hike to the falls, sprays of mist and the roaring sound of the falls offer an exceptional experience. The falls are a perfect place for those who love diving and swimming. The site can be accessed from Angagura trading centre. At 7:00pm we locate one of the town hotels for a meal and accommodation.
Day 4: Visit Guruguru Caves
At 10:00am we head to Guruguru Caves which were said to be the hiding place for the natives during the Lamogi Rebellion under the prominent cultural ruler known as Rwot Otto Yai. The top of the hills opening give clear views of the lower farmlands. The activities for this site include trekking, hiking, and camping.
By 6:30pm the team drives to Gulu town for a meal and to spend a night at one of the convenient hotels.
Day 5 & 6: Visit Mt. Murungole and Kidepo Valley National Park
By 9:00am we are out to begin our expedition to Karenga where Mt. Murungole is located, approximately 4 hours away. At exactly 90 minutes on the road, we make stoppage at Acholibur, for some refreshments and by one o'clock we arrive at our destination. The mountain is one of the four highest mountain ranges in Karamoja sub-region. With its peak at 2,749m, the mountain has exciting features and dramatic landscapes. The team is looking forward to participating in these thrilling activities such as mount climbing, trekking and hiking. The team then heads to other areas within Kidepo Valley National Park , a rugged Savannah dominated by Mount Morungole and bisected by two rivers, Kidepo and Narus. Lonyii summit hiking, guided night drives are an amazing experience. Tourist accommodation at the park includes a rest camp run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and other lodges.
Day 7: Visit Metheniko game Reserve and Mount Moroto
At 9:00am we set off to Moroto and in about two hours we take a break at Locherep for about 20 minutes. We arrive at Metheniko Game Reserve two hours later and immediately hire a toue guide. The Reserve stands out for its beautiful landscape, unique vegetation, mountains and rocky outcrops making it a perfect place for mount climbing and hiking.
After having lunch in Moroto town, we drive to Mount Moroto, which is the highest mountain in the karamoja region and one of the most beautiful in the North - Eastern part of Uganda. The region around Mount Moroto is a forest reserve measuring around 480 Sq km. Due to its relatively low elevation the mountain requires no special equipment and expertise to climb however, guides are available.
Day 8: Travel back to Kampala
After breakfast at around 8:00am the team sets off to Kampala via the Gulu - Kampala highway. Around three stoppages will be done in the areas of Acholibur, Kamdini and Migyera in order to have a comfortable and safe journey. Arrival time is 6:00pm.
