Turkish Airlines is taking bold steps to elevate Uganda’s tourism profile in Europe, partnering with Ugandan tourism entrepreneur Amos Wekesa to promote the East African nation in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Amos Wekesa, the founder of Great Lakes Safaris Limited, revealed the collaboration in a recent X post, highlighting the airline’s invitation to deliver presentations to tour operators in the Baltic countries.

The initiative stems from Turkish Airlines’ Uganda office, which selected Wekesa alongside representatives from Kenya and Rwanda to showcase East Africa’s tourism potential. “The ticket wasn’t the excitement, but the fact that they want someone to push Uganda,” Wekesa shared. Europe, with its 50 countries, remains largely untapped for Ugandan tourism, with over 70% of European nations unaware of Uganda’s offerings, according to Wekesa.
Turkish Airlines, a key player in African aviation with 61 destinations across the continent, is set to further connect Uganda to the world. Starting July 2025, the airline will launch direct, non-stop flights from Istanbul to Entebbe, making it the second direct European route to Uganda after Uganda Airlines’ London service, which began May 18, 2025. Currently, Turkish Airlines flights to Entebbe route through Kigali, Rwanda.

During discussions with Ali Ozdemir, Turkish Airlines’ Uganda country manager, potential partnerships emerged, including support for the Rwenzori Marathon and featuring Uganda in the airline’s in-flight magazine. Ozdemir praised Uganda’s tourism potential, citing its 165 lakes, diverse wildlife, and unique combination of mammals and primates. “It’s a country with massive potential,” he said, echoing Wekesa’s vision.
