Uganda has officially signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa, also known as the Raptors MoU. This agreement, endorsed by over 65 countries globally, underscores Uganda’s dedication to safeguarding these vital species.

The signing ceremony, held at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, was presided over by Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, Uganda’s State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities. Raptors, which include hawks, eagles, vultures, falcons, and owls, play a crucial role as ecological indicators and contribute significantly to tourism and cultural heritage. There are more than 500 species across the globe, and Uganda is home to 91 species of these birds, many of which are migratory, but their populations are declining at an alarming rate.

During the event, Hon. Mugarra emphasized the importance of raptors, not only for their ecological value but also for the economic and cultural benefits they bring. He announced plans to develop and implement a National Raptors Conservation and Management Strategy, calling on stakeholders to support efforts to halt the decline of these majestic birds.
This Memorandum of Understanding represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenges posed by habitat loss, climate change, and other threats to migratory birds of prey. By joining this global initiative, Uganda reaffirms its commitment to preserving biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for these vital species.
