Uganda Declared Ebola-Free by WHO in 2026 | Safe Travel Guide, Top Attractions & Responsible Adventures

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared Uganda’s 2026 Ebola outbreak over, confirming the country’s successful containment of the disease.

This follows Uganda’s own announcement on 28th July after completing the mandatory 42-day monitoring period with no new infections.

Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths, all linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. The final confirmed case was reported on 21st June, and the last patient was discharged in July.

Intensive surveillance and rapid response measures ensured no undetected chains of transmission remained.

World Health Organization (WHO) officials praised Uganda’s strong surveillance systems, contact tracing and coordinated response for bringing the outbreak under control quickly.

While Uganda celebrates this public-health success, a large Ebola outbreak continues in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded more than 5,600 cases and over 2,700 deaths, making it the second-deadliest on record and the largest ever in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Transmission remains active, complicated by insecurity and population movement. World Health Organization (WHO) has also flagged a $30 million funding gap that threatens supplies in the worst-affected areas. Both outbreaks involve the same Bundibugyo strain.

Uganda remains on alert for possible imported cases due to cross-border movement, but the end of its domestic outbreak marks a major achievement and reopens the country confidently for travellers.
