Uganda has marked a significant milestone for sports tourism by successfully hosting the inaugural African Dragon Boat Racing competition on the waters of Lake Victoria in Kawuku, Wakiso District which took place from 1st to 4th October 2026.
The three-day event brought together teams from Uganda, Egypt, Kenya and South Africa, alongside special guests and officials from Singapore and Hong Kong.
The racing event formed part of celebrations marking 70 years of China-Africa people-to-people friendship and showcased the growing synergy between sport, cultural exchange and tourism.

Sports and Tourism: An Inseparable Partnership
Speaking at the official opening, Alhaji Faruk Kirunda (Special Presidential Assistant on Press and Mobilisation and Deputy Press Secretary) emphasised the powerful link between the two sectors.
In remarks delivered on his behalf by Mr Jimmy Nambiro, he stated: “You cannot separate sports from tourism.”
He highlighted the competition’s potential to strengthen international friendships, attract visitors to Uganda, and create new opportunities for investment.
The event, organised under the African Dragon Boat Federation, demonstrated how sporting gatherings can serve as platforms for destination promotion and people-to-people connections.

Showcasing Lake Victoria’s Water-Based Tourism Potential
For Uganda’s tourism industry, the competition offered a timely opportunity to spotlight Lake Victoria’s vast potential for water-based and adventure tourism.
Beyond the races, visiting teams and supporters were encouraged to explore more of the country, from its wildlife and cultural sites to community experiences and hospitality offerings around the lake and beyond.
Dragon boat racing, a traditional Chinese water sport with more than 2,500 years of history, has found a natural home on Africa’s largest lake by surface area.
The calm yet expansive waters of Lake Victoria, combined with Uganda’s strategic location and growing capacity to host international events, position the country as a potential future hub for the sport on the continent.

Government officials and organisers have reaffirmed their commitment to developing dragon boat racing further, recognising its value in sports diplomacy, youth engagement, cultural exchange and tourism growth.
Why This Matters for Responsible Tourism
Events like the African Dragon Boat Racing competition illustrate how carefully managed sports tourism can deliver multiple benefits: international visibility, local economic opportunities, cultural exchange, and a platform to promote sustainable use of natural assets such as Lake Victoria.
When visitors stay longer, engage with communities and experience authentic water-based activities, the positive impact extends far beyond the competition itself.
