In remarks delivered on his behalf by Mr Jimmy Nambiro, he stated: “You cannot separate sports from tourism.”

Showcasing Lake Victoria’s Water-Based Tourism Potential

For Uganda’s tourism industry, the competition offered a timely opportunity to spotlight Lake Victoria’s vast potential for water-based and adventure tourism.

Beyond the races, visiting teams and supporters were encouraged to explore more of the country, from its wildlife and cultural sites to community experiences and hospitality offerings around the lake and beyond.

Dragon boat racing, a traditional Chinese water sport with more than 2,500 years of history, has found a natural home on Africa’s largest lake by surface area.

The calm yet expansive waters of Lake Victoria, combined with Uganda’s strategic location and growing capacity to host international events, position the country as a potential future hub for the sport on the continent.

Why This Matters for Responsible Tourism

Events like the African Dragon Boat Racing competition illustrate how carefully managed sports tourism can deliver multiple benefits: international visibility, local economic opportunities, cultural exchange, and a platform to promote sustainable use of natural assets such as Lake Victoria.

When visitors stay longer, engage with communities and experience authentic water-based activities, the positive impact extends far beyond the competition itself.
