Uganda Marks Historic Rhino Comeback to Ajai Wildlife Reserve After Four Decades

In a landmark moment for Uganda wildlife conservation, southern white rhinos are once again roaming the vast floodplains of Ajai Wildlife Reserve in the West Nile region.

On January 5th to 7th, 2026, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) successfully translocated the first four magnificent southern white rhinos from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to Ajai Wildlife Reserve, marking the historic return of these iconic animals to their ancestral home after more than 40 years.

This milestone launches a national program to reintroduce a total of 20 rhinos to Ajai Wildlife Reserve in phases.

The initial group is now settling in under close monitoring by expert veterinary teams and rangers, with the remaining translocations planned following successful adaptation.

Here are stunning glimpses of this extraordinary event:

A Proud Heritage Restored

Ajai Wildlife Reserve, spanning 166 square kilometers in Madi-Okollo District, was once a stronghold for white rhinos.

By the mid-1960s, it hosted around 60 of Uganda’s remaining 80 rhinos, symbolizing pride and natural heritage for local communities.

The reserve’s rich grasslands and wetlands provided the perfect habitat for these gentle giants.

The reintroduction revives this legacy, blending conservation success with cultural restoration. Communities in West Nile have celebrated the rhinos’ arrival with enthusiasm, viewing it as a powerful reconnection to their ancestral identity.

Behind the Milestone: Preparation and Vision

Years of dedicated effort made this achievement possible. The National Rhino Conservation Strategy guided the process, supported by habitat restoration, infrastructure upgrades (including roads, water points, and fencing), and community engagement.

In December 2025, Uganda strengthened its rhino population by importing eight additional southern white rhinos from South Africa, boosting the breeding program at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, home to a thriving population that grew from just six founder rhinos.

The translocation from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to Ajai Wildlife Reserve represents the first-ever internal movement of rhinos between protected areas in Uganda, showcasing world-class expertise in wildlife management.

Boosting Tourism and Biodiversity

The return of rhinos to Ajai Wildlife Reserve promises exciting opportunities for Uganda safari tourism. Visitors will soon experience guided rhino tracking in a pristine wilderness, alongside other wildlife, contributing to local economies and funding further conservation.

This initiative also enhances biodiversity, supports ecosystem balance, and sets a positive example for rhino recovery across Africa.

Uganda’s conservation community, led by Uganda Wildlife Authority’s Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi, celebrates this as a new chapter of hope, resilience, and commitment to protecting the nation’s natural treasures.

Rhinos are back in the wild, a powerful testament to what dedicated conservation can achieve. Welcome home!
