The combination of high-peaked volcanoes and low lying lakes look like a scene from a movie set. By far the most enchanting setting from which to view the volcanic peaks is from Mount Gahinga Lodge nexteled at the base of Mount Sabinyo, Muhavura and Gahinga, and justr a few minute’s walk from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s tiny national park.

According to Uganda Wildlife Authority, the 34-sq-km Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest of the 10 Uganda National Parks. Located in the far southwest corner of Uganda’s sliver of volcanic Virunga range, which extends in greater part to the dense tropical rainforests of Eastern Democratic Rep of Congo aka DRC and northern Rwanda.  Mgahinga is one of the best destinations in Uganda for hiking and walking adventures.

The 434-sq-km Virunga Conservation Area that is shared between the three countries (Uganda, DRC, and Rwanda) is home to half the world’s mountain gorilla population. Given Uganda’s small share of the park, the national park’s one habituated gorilla family regularly ducks across the mountains into Rwanda. This adds a certain unpredictability to gorilla tracking adventure tours here, and accounts for the park’s relative obscurity compared to Bwindi Impenetrable Gorilla National Park, located in the Bwindi Forest. The trekking in Mgahinga will take the visitor through light woodland and bamboo forest rather than the thicker jungle that is characteristic of Bwindi.

A visit to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is highly recommended for visitors to Uganda on a gorilla trekking adventure safari. This Mgahinga National Park has few visitors, so visitors get to experience it with just a ranger or two for company. The endangered golden monkey is endemic to the Albertine Rift, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a rare chance to track them. Birdwatchers will delight in the great array of bird species in the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – look out for the Rwenzori Turraco on a 3-4 hour Sabinyo Gorge Walk which offers some excellent birding opportunities.
