On their Top 10 Best 2019 Budget Travel Destinations, Uganda was ranked as the best affordable option, with gorilla trekking permits starting at just USD 450 if travellers visit in the low season of April, May or November, and USD 600 a person the rest of the year. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are the two main areas for mountain gorilla hikes in Uganda.

Wildlife enthusiasts know that a mountain gorilla tracking in Uganda is the ultimate wildlife experience. Uganda is the country where East and West Africa meet, featuring lush forests inhabited by primates and arid savannahs which are home to a wide array of plains game. Lakes, mountains, tea plantations and waterfalls are some of the landmarks that made an impression on Winston Churchill when he travelled here, leading him to refer to it as “The Pearl of Africa”.

Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were two African other destinations also featured on the gorilla trekking adventure list.

Adventure travellers who have been longing to trek and see mountain gorillas in the wild have three options: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. In the Congo, Virunga National Park closed for half of 2018 following an attack against a group of British tourists, and safety remains an issue. Rwanda raised prices for its gorilla treks from USD 750 to USD 1,500 a person as the country targets the luxury market. By process of elimination, that leaves Uganda as the best affordable option, with gorilla permits.
