Guangzhou, China – On May 2, 2025, Uganda made a striking impression at the 137th Canton Fair, the world’s largest trade expo, with a vibrant booth showcasing the country’s rich agricultural and artisanal offerings. Led by Ambassador Judyth Nsababera, Uganda’s delegation aimed to attract international buyers and investors, marking a significant step in the nation’s push to expand its global trade footprint during the fair’s third phase, which ran from May 1 to May 5.

The Canton Fair, held biannually in Guangzhou, China, is a global trade platform that attracts over 24,000 exhibitors and generates approximately $1.2 trillion in sales annually. Phase 3 of the 137th session, which focuses on textiles, garments, food, and consumer goods, provided an ideal stage for Uganda to highlight its diverse agricultural products, such as coffee, tea, and edible oils, as well as handcrafted goods. The Ugandan booth, adorned with the national colors of black, yellow, and red, drew significant attention, as captured in a widely shared post by Amb. Judyth Nsababera on X, where she celebrated Uganda’s growing presence on the international stage.

Ambassador Judyth Nsababera, known for her advocacy for women’s empowerment and her diplomatic efforts to promote Uganda, emphasized the importance of such platforms in fostering trade relationships. “The Canton Fair offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the Pearl of Africa to the world,” she stated in her post, which garnered positive responses from Ugandans and international observers alike.

Uganda’s participation aligns with its broader economic goals, particularly in the agricultural sector, which employs 68% of the country’s workforce, according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS). The East Africa country is a leading producer of coffee, with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority reporting exports of 5.9 million 60-kilo bags valued at $877 million in 2022. The Uganda government aims to triple its coffee production to 1.2 million tons annually by 2025, a target that international exposure at events like the Canton Fair could help achieve.

However, challenges such as limited packaging capabilities, poor post-harvest handling, and export restrictions to neighboring countries like Kenya remain hurdles for Ugandan producers, as noted in a trade report by trade.gov. Experts see Uganda’s presence at the Canton Fair as a strategic move to tap into the Chinese market, one of the largest consumer bases globally.

“China’s demand for high-quality agricultural products is growing, and Uganda’s offerings, from coffee to organic produce, are well-positioned to meet that demand,” said Dr. Li Wei, a trade analyst based in Guangzhou.

The fair also provided an opportunity for Ugandan businesses to forge long-term partnerships with Chinese suppliers and distributors, potentially addressing some of the logistical challenges faced by the sector. For Chinese businesses and tourists, Uganda’s participation at the Canton Fair opens a window into the country’s potential as both a trade partner and a travel destination.

Known as the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda offers more than just business opportunities—Our country is a land of breathtaking landscapes, from the misty Rwenzori Mountains to the vast savannas of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where visitors can witness the Big Five on safari.

With Uganda Airlines (Uganda National Airline and national flag carrier) planning to launch direct flights to Guangzhou in the near future, as reported by trade.gov, travel between the two nations is set to become more accessible, fostering deeper cultural and economic ties.
