Unveiling Uganda’s Coffee Heritage

Do you know where the birthplace of coffee is? I’ll give you a hint. It’s not Brazil nor Colombia. It is Uganda

Ugandan black gold – If you didn’t know Responsible Tourism Company works with coffee Farmers from Central West and Southwestern Uganda on our Uganda Coffee Tours from Kampala.

In Uganda, coffee is a critical part of the economy and its importance is growing. Over 1.8 million households grow coffee in Uganda, and coffee contributes nearly a third of the country’s export earnings, paying for critical infrastructure like roads, hospitals, and schools.

This East African country (Uganda) has ambitious goals to quadruple coffee production in the coming years. Uganda’s coffee industry is flourishing – Despite this many of our visitors don’t know anything about Uganda coffee. Most of you don’t even drink coffee so let me (the author) a diagnosed coffee addict introduce you to some key things;

There are many types of coffee but the two most important ones are Robusta and Arabica.

Robusta is the original coffee plant. It was born right here in Uganda and DRC. Uganda robusta coffee is stronger, bolder and has that kick you need in the morning.

Then there’s Arabica robusta as younger daughter to robusta coffee who was born and raised on the high plains of Ethiopia. Arabica is smoother, more refined and as a result more expensive.

Robusta coffee makes the majority of coffee production in Uganda. The plant grows in the country’s mountainous areas of Rwenzori, Mount Elgon, Bunyaruguru and Kanungu have the high altitude needed for world-class Arabica.

Did you know that in 2024 Uganda passed Ethiopia to become the largest exporter of coffee on the African continent? Despite this Ethiopia is still the largest producer but Ethiopians all actually like coffee, so they consume a good chunk of the coffee themselves. This coffee culture in Ethiopia ultimately helps them understand their own crop better and helps the industry thrive.

Meanwhile you all drink tea. If we want to grow the quality of Uganda’s coffee sector and add more value at home, we need to start by building a local coffee culture. So tea lovers, what do you think? Will you be drinking some more coffee or will you continue to leave it to the Bazungu.
